Today, Tolkien might have come to represent the old guard of fantasy – the “locker room” that the late Ursula K LeGuin once derided. Though many authors have since found great success in his genre, Tolkien, born in 1892, is unrivalled in his reputation as a meticulous creator who knew his world down to the last blade of grass. After all, never is a story more alive than when it is in progress. As McIlwaine talks me through the items, I find that seeing the exhibition in this liminal state lends an unexpected resonance to the experience. We pass the skeleton of what will be the main entrance to the exhibition I am told by its curator, Catherine McIlwaine, that the Doors of Durin will be projected into this dark passageway to welcome visitors. Visiting before it opens, with preparations still ongoing, I must rely a little on my imagination to colour between the lines.

This method is incredibly frustrating, but it's the only way to exert any influence over what kind of Orcs spawn.A s a fantasy lover, I can barely remember a time when I wasn’t aware of JRR Tolkien. However, if everything goes right, and you've cleared out a spot in advance for your new Orc, you can get an Epic or Legendary Orc Captain to spawn precisely how you want them to be. This can either end up in your brand-new dream Orc being killed, or one of your other favorite Orcs in the region being murdered. Secondly, if the Orc in promoted in a region with no empty spots for new Orcs, they'll duel someone for their place. First, there's a good chance the Orc that took you out will spawn as just a regular old Orc Captain. Once the Orc of your choice kills you, it's in the hands of the Random Numbers Generator. You can always try over though, so don't get discouraged if you end up with a dud. You rarely encounter lone Orcs, so it's easy to accidentally have the wrong one make the killing blow. That sounds easier than it actually is because your objective is to be killed by a particular kind of Orc. To learn which tribe rules an area, look around at the banners and aesthetic of the buildings that way you can make sure your soon-to-be new buddy will look how you want and have the abilities specific to the tribe of your choosing. Location matters too, because that determines the tribe your new captain will be a part of.

If a Defender Captain is more to your liking, you can die to one of the shield wielders. If you want an Archer Captain, die to an archer. When you get further through the game and have some time to get picky about your Orcs, you can influence what type of Orc you get by merely dying at the right time to the right enemy. When that happens, they're assigned a title and get their personality traits. Any regular Orc soldier that kills you during Shadow of War gets promoted to an Orc Captain.
